The patterns that keep you stuck are not just mental—they are in your body. That’s what somatic means—related to the body. Perhaps you have noticed that you can know where a problem came from or why you do something, but it still doesn’t change. Our moment-to-moment experience is made up of thoughts, emotions and sensations and all of these channels contribute to our behavior and patterns. They also help us make change.

The body has information about the past and present and is a big driver of the reactions we have and the choices we make. In order to heal, we have to work with the whole person—mind and body.

What this looks like in session is paying attention to what you are saying and also what is happening in your body as you say it. We will use our attention to help your physiology ride waves of activation and settling. By connecting with the body, you will have more ability to be in the present moment. And we’ll do this at a pace that does not create a feeling of overwhelm, which is how we grow capacity and resilience.

To the right (or below) is a video of a baby elephant in the ocean, showing how we can make progress when we pace what we are doing, dipping in and out so it’s not too much, increasing our ability step by step.

If you are tired of trying to think or figure your way out of your problem, whether that is trauma, anxiety, pain or something else, somatic therapy might be for you.
